A delightfully restored mill available as a holiday home

The lounge has a character of its own, with the original mill workings playing a role as a central feature of the room. Not your run of the mill (excuse the pun) room.

The Lounge

Back downstairs, through the dining room, duck as you go through the 16th century door and into the lounge (what used to be the kitchen !!) The dividing wall between this room and the mill itself has now gone and you can see the whole room. The window on your left used to be the back door, (even if it is at the front). On your right hand side the fire place has been rebuilt to house a wood-burner and incorporate the clome oven. (if you ask nicely, Ian will tell you what happened to the old one and a large chunk of wall!!) Apart from the small kitchen which housed a small hand pump to the well, this room was basically designed to house the mill, it’s workings and storage of grain.

The Lounge
  • The Mill Workings
  • Probably the most amazing part of the house and like a trip back through time. The mill workings show how intricate the workings of the mill were. And its in the lounge!

The workings themselves I can write about all day and get most of it wrong, but it’s all here to see. Some of the wood has been replaced because of rot or decay or structural damage. The largest cast iron wheel has been re-spoked and welded in 4 places due to structural damage. The beams, flooring stairs, ceiling and roof are all new and as far as possible all replaced in there original position. The floor levels have largely remained unaltered although we are not sure where the original stairs used to be. An original doorway allows yet another access to the front of the property. This was the first room we went in when we visited the Mill in 1993. At that time the roof and upper walls had fallen in replaced by a galvanised iron roof. The interior was a wood store and the remains of a hen’s house !!! Still, there dropping made the grass grow in the garden and quite a few of the old plants came back to life !!

  • The Lounge
  • Probably one of the most unique lounges in the country. The bread oven sits in the fireplace with one of the original millstones as a plynth

Lets move on and look at the masterbedroom.
